Hatty Richmond Dakin: Solo Show 24 February - 28 March 2024

Cambridge-based contemporary oil painter Hatty Richmond Dakin returns to Huntingdon Art Gallery with this exhibition of expressive landscapes, alongside soulful portraits.

The portraits include two from her ‘Readers’ series which beautifully capture her sitters while un-self-consciously absorbed in the world of their literature. One (unframed) self-portrait turns the artists gaze onto herself – observing and observed – which looks out from the canvas with disarming frankness.

Hatty’s landscapes are packed with the feeling as much as the view of a place. The emotive, overarching title of her most recent series of work ‘this is where my bones are’ contrasts with factual titles such as ‘sea wall’ and ‘the sea and the storm’ of individual pieces, inviting us to make our own interpretations. Her expressive use of paint which in turn smooths, scuffs and scours the surface evokes the movement of water and wind while carving out the features of coastlines and fens.

About the Artist: Hatty Richmond Dakin

Hatty works full-time from her home studio in Cambridge. She turned to art after many years in a corporate career. In her own words:

I picked up a brush and started and since then I’ve not looked back. For more than half my life I’ve been holding my breath. I am driven by expression and feeling, and inspired by a search for peace.

‘My current work is primarily concerned with the natural world… but what matters most is what they mean to you.’
